About

My tai chi journey began while walking on a New York City street. Inside a store window, I saw a sign advertising a Cheng Man-Ching tai chi class. Knowing little about tai chi, I instead enrolled in a Shotokan karate class. It turned out that my instructor, Herman Kauz, was a student in Cheng Man-Ching’s school.

Several year later, I received tai chi and push hands instruction in an upstate New York in a martial arts school. The chief instructor had learned tai chi in New York City, possibly studying with William C. C. Chen, a disciple of Cheng Man-Ching.

My instruction continued in New Jersey where I learned both tai chi hand and sword forms, specializing in Yang Style 24 Form. Then, I was offered the opportunity to compete in a national tournament in China, attended tai chi events and tournaments, including A Taste of China in Virginia multiple times, co-authored a 24 Forms book, and taught tai chi for the first time.

After that, I began the first tai chi class at a senior center in New Jersey, teaching first 24 Forms and then William C. C. Chen’s 60 Form tai chi.

During the Covid crisis, while I continued practicing tai chi, I began studying qigong (pronounced chee-goong) at both Bruce Frantzis’ and Paul Cavel’s schools, where I learned a variety of qigong forms including Dragon and Tiger, Heaven and Earth, and Gods Playing in the Clouds.

I have resumed teaching again, incorporating both tai chi and qigong into my instruction.
